Twenty-Five Dollars a Paycheck Became the $550 Check That Paid for December
Sep 5, 2026 By Xyla Amburn
Twenty-two deposits of $25 went into a credit union holiday club. Total: $550 plus $1.90 interest. The check arrived November 1. December spending came to $538, all debit, no card balance. Last year December cost $612 on credit. Round two starts October 9 at $30.
Twenty-Five Dollars a Paycheck Became the $550 Check That Paid for December

Five hundred fifty dollars, in a paper check, in an envelope with a window in it. It came November 1 from a credit union I had belonged to for eleven years without once walking inside, and I stood at the mailbox reading it twice before I believed the amount. It was a holiday club check, cut on schedule, in the year 2025, and it is the single most old-fashioned financial object I have ever held.

The year before, December 2024 cost $612 by the time the last gift bag was bought, all of it on the Venture card at 28.99 percent APR, and the balance took minimum payments til April and cost $71.34 in interest on the way down to zero. I have a math background. I want that on the record, cuz what follows is not sophisticated.

The club's whole trick is a wall. The account pays 0.35 percent, which is nothin', and it beat my high-yield savings anyway, because the savings account could see the checking account and the club could not. The money in the club does not exist til November. That is the feature.

the $612 december before

Itemized, because I itemize now: gifts $287, gas for two holiday drives $96, tree $48, groceries and one spiral ham $117, shipping $41, wrapping paper and a bow situation $23. Total: $612, all plastic, none of it planned. The January statement arrived the same week as the property tax bill, which is a pairing I do not recommend to anyone. The interest alone was two movie nights out, charged to me, by me, for the privilege of paying for December twice.

how the club works

The mechanics take four minutes to set up and four minutes to forget. Vantage West Credit Union, holiday club account, enroll by mid-October, pick an amount per deposit, done. Mine: $25, pulled automatically every other Friday alongside my paycheck. Withdraw early and it costs a $10 fee, which the fine print calls a penalty and I call the entire point. Payout is a check or a deposit on November 1. No app notification, no streaks. A woman named Darlene confirmed all of it by phone in under five minutes. No reward points either, and no emails begging me to come back. There is a $10 fee and a date, and that is the entire product.

twenty-two Fridays

The deposits: October 11, 2024 thru October 3, 2025, every other Friday, 22 of 'em, $25 each, $550 total. I missed none, which surprised me, cuz I miss things. The bank app shows them as one column of identical $25 rows, and I have scrolled the list twice just to look at it. Twenty-five dollars is one takeout order with a tip, one phone case, half a tank of gas, nothing you would notice. The paychecks never registered the leak. That is the part I still cannot get over: the money left for a year and nothing got worse.

the march raid

Honesty requires the part where I nearly blew it up. In March my car needed a $640 repair, and my hand went straight for the club, which is locked, and then went for the Ally savings, which was not. The $640 came outta savings, evidently, and savings never honestly recovered its footing that spring, and the club rolled on untouched the whole time. If the club had been as reachable as savings, the tree this year would have been plastic and I would have called it a choice.

the payout math

The check: $550 principal plus $1.90 interest at 0.35 percent APY. My Ally account at 4.10 percent would have earned about $18 on the same drips, so the club cost me $16 on paper and paid me back the one thing savings never has: in March, when the car broke, the club money was outta reach, which is the same thing as still being there. Deposited November 3. It sat in checking with instructions.

the december ledger

December 2025, itemized the same way: gifts $214, gas $96, tree $48 at the Lions lot on Fourth Street, groceries and the same spiral ham $131, my nephew's birthday-adjacent book $30, cards and stamps $19. Total: $538. Paid out of the club money and the debit card, zero credit card balance in January, zero interest paid to anybody. The leftover $12 rode into January, which had never once happened in my adult life.

round two

Enrollment for this year opened August 25 and took four minutes again, at $30 a pull this time, twenty-two Fridays running October through next October, $660 if all of them land. The tree budget gets $60 this year, real tree, taller. Darlene will not remember me. The branch and I have still never met.

another envelope with a window

Next November 1, another envelope with a window shows up, and I will read it twice before I believe it again, same as this year. $660, if all twenty-two land, invisible the whole way there. That is it. That is the whole club.

A Sure Bet
